Growing Non-GMO Gazania New Day Series Flower Seeds
Plant seeds in prepared soil. Soak the soil surrounding the seeds with a mister. Choose a spot in full sun with proper drainage. New Day Series gazania has a wildflower hardiness and can be sown directly outside after the frost. For earliest blooms, begin seeds indoors 6-8 weeks prior. Germination will take 14-28 days in full lighting and harden off gazania seedlings in a warm sunny spot in the garden or keep indoors with good drainage and full sun. New Day Series gazania does not perform well in clay or poorly drained soils. Gazania is known to be tolerant of drought and dry soils. New Day Series is a dwarfed variety and should be planted on the south end of the garden to avoid being cast in shade.
Deadheading after flowering is recommended to encourage new flowers! Watch out for aphids and mealybugs when overwintering indoors. Overwinter indoors by bringing the potted plant inside and placing it in a sunny area. Dig up planted gazanias in the fall and transplant to a pot big enough to accommodate the roots to also bring inside. Cut the plants back in the fall by about two thirds. Only water when the soil is dry.
Gazania New Day Series in the Flower Garden
This New Day Series Gazania is a big attractor of butterflies. Gazanias find their home in a variety of gardens. They can blend into wildflower, pollinator, ornamental, and cottage gardens. They pair well with bedding annuals and perennial wildflowers.
Landscape Use of Gazania New Day Series
Gazanias are perfect for full sun gardens and a variety of landscape styles. Use for edging, rock gardens, xeriscape gardens or even in a beautiful Mediterranean-inspired garden. They are useful in the landscape as filler plants between perennials. Plant them en masse on banks and slopes to prevent and control soil erosion. They are even show-stopping in baskets and containers for patios and porches.
About Gazania New Day Series Garden Seeds
These magnificent Gazanias can also be used as cut flowers for arrangements. They add brightness and texture to any bouquet or centerpiece. To harvest as a cut flower, snip off the bloom as far down the stem as possible and then store it in cold water to prolong its life. Change out the water every one to two days for indoor color lasting 1-2 weeks.
Expect bright blooms about 3-4 inches wide.
Gazania splendens, or more commonly known as Treasure Flower, is native to the hot and thirsty regions of southern Africa. Although native to coastal Africa, the gazania has been naturalized to the Mediterranean region and thrives perennially along its warm coastal winters.
The genus Gazania pays homage to 15th century scholar Theodorus Gaza who was the first to translate the Latin botanical works of ancient Grecian botanist Theophrastus.
