Growing Non-GMO Coleus Rainbow Mixture Flower Seeds
Rainbow Mixture coleus seeds are successful as both indoor and outdoor specimens. For the earliest spring color, start Rainbow Mixture seeds 6-8 weeks prior to the last frost date. Seeds should germinate in 7-14 days in full lighting. Plant 2-3 Rainbow Mixture coleus seeds 9 inches apart and ¼ inch deep into loose, fertile, and well-draining soil in part sun to part shade. Rainbow Mixture seeds will profit from shade in long summers and intense heat. Do not let the soil dry out or become oversaturated.
Coleus is better known for its foliage than its flowers and is very low-maintenance. It benefits from a balanced extended-release granular fertilizer incorporated into the soil when transplanting. Mixing well-rotted compost or another organic alternative into the soil before planting also works in many cases. Rainbow Mixture doesn’t require any pruning unless desired. To make the plants shorter and bushier, when they reach a half foot tall, pinch off the top 1-2 inches of the central branch, down to the next node. This will encourage branching and more leave development. If planted outside, coleus is commonly re-potted in the autumn to overwinter indoors. Cut it back before overwintering. It can be reintroduced outdoors in the spring once freezing temperatures have ceased.
Coleus Rainbow Mixture in the Flower Garden
Coleus is perfect as a background or filler plant to enhance and highlight larger, blooming flowers. Use Coleus to fill in areas that still need a bit of color or texture, but perhaps get too much shade for a flashy bloom. They are perfect for a border of a cut flower garden or annual bed. They are also very popular for potted arrangements with flowering annuals or grasses.
Landscape Use of Coleus Rainbow Mixture
Rainbow Mixture seeds mix well with canna, hibiscus, and other elegant tropical blooms that work together to complement any landscape design. Coleus is ideal for walkways, borders, fences, or patio displays, particularly those in partially shaded spots.
About Coleus Rainbow Mixture Garden Seeds
Coleus is not recommended for human consumption. It contains harmful substances that may cause gastrointestinal distress. It is also harmful to cats, dogs, and horses if ingested.
Although they will produce small flowers when planted in the sun, they are typically removed before they reach maturity to not distract from the more interesting foliage. To grow as a perennial, reduce watering and prune the foliage back in late fall.
Coleus is even popular for use as a house plant and typically thrives in bright, filtered light. Take care not to overwater. They do well with humidity. Place the pot on top of a tray of pebbles with water to increase humidity. Avoid spraying water on the leaves.
Plectranthus scutellarioides, otherwise known as Coleus, is a shrub native to the perennially warm climates of Australia, India, and Southeast Asia but has since been naturalized throughout the world. Plectranthus scutellarioides is also known as Solenostemon scutellarioides (its previous taxonomic name) and is a member of the coleus family.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"I love my coleus plants because they add color to my patio in the summer but they also make a great addition to my indoor plant collection through the winter!”
