Growing Non-GMO Coleus Kong Series Flower Seeds
Kong Series coleus seeds are popularly grown as both indoor and outdoor favorites. For the earliest spring color, start Kong Series seeds 6-8 weeks prior and seeds will germinate in 7-14 days in full lighting. Plant 2-3 Kong Series coleus seeds 10 inches apart and ¼ inch deep into loose, rich, and well-drained soil in partial sun to partial shade. Kong Series seeds will profit from shade in long summers and direct heat. Do not let the soil dry out, but do not over-saturate the roots either.
Coleus is better known for its foliage than its flowers and is very low-maintenance. Coleus benefits from an extended-release balanced granular fertilizer incorporated into the soil at the time of planting. Mixing well-rotted compost into the soil before planting also works just as well in many cases. Kong Series doesn’t require any pruning unless desired. To make the plants bushier, when they reach 6” tall, pinch off the top inch or two of the central branch to the next node. If planted outside, coleus is commonly repotted in the autumn to be kept indoors over winter. It can be reintroduced outdoors in the spring. Cut it back before overwintering.
Coleus Kong Series in the Flower Garden
Coleus is perfect as a background or filler plant to enhance and highlight larger, blooming flowers. Use Coleus to fill in areas that still need a bit of color or texture. Perfect for a border for a cut flower garden. They are also very popular for potted arrangements with flowering annuals or grasses.
Landscape Use of Coleus Kong Series
Kong Series seeds mix well with bright torenia, salvia, and other elegant tropical blooms certain to complement any home or garden during the long summers. Coleus is perfect for walkways, borders, fences, or patio arrangements.
About Coleus Kong Series Garden Seeds
Coleus is easily deer resistant. It is also not recommended for human consumption either. It contains harmful substances which may cause gastrointestinal distress. It is also toxic to cats, dogs, and horses.
Although they will produce small flowers when planted in sunny areas, they are typically removed before they reach maturity to not distract from the colorful foliage. To grow as perennials, reduce watering and cut back the foliage in late fall.
Coleus is even popular for use as a house plant and typically thrives in bright, filtered light. Be extra careful not to overwater to avoid root rot. However, they do well with humidity; do not get water on the leaves but to increase humidity, place the pot on a tray of pebbles with water.
Plectranthus scutellarioides, otherwise known as Coleus, is a shrubby native to the perennially warm climates of India, Australia, and Southeast Asia, but has since been naturalized throughout many areas. Plectranthus scutellarioides is also synonymous with Solenostemon scutellarioides (its former taxonomic name) and is a member of the coleus genus.
Tips From Our Gardeners
