Growing Non-GMO Royal Carpet Alyssum Flower Seeds
Alyssum seeds are very hardy and should be sown straight into the garden bed after the danger of frost has passed. Do not plant outside until after the danger of frost has passed. For early spring blooms in cooler zones, germinate the seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost under a grow light and in warm soil, at least 60°F. Before transplanting outdoors, harden off the seedlings by gradually lengthening the time they spend outdoors. To increase the drainage of your soil, work compost, sand, or ground-up mulch into the soil.
Water the plants regularly but ensure that the leaves and the top 1-2 inches of soil can fully dry between irrigations. Although it is not necessary, pruning off any branches whose leaves have completed blooming can encourage a more desirable and compact growth habit. In exceptionally hot and arid climates, provide part shade and a coating of mulch at the base. Plants are just as popularly grown indoors as they are outdoors and may reseed in optimal climates.
Royal Carpet Alyssum in the Flower Garden
These Alyssums will gladly attract beneficial insects of all kinds to pollinate your landscape or garden. Alyssum is also the perfect plant to fill in areas and prevent weeds while spring bloomers like Arabis or tulips are inactive. Similarly, it works nicely underneath larger plants like roses and clematis to protect the soil and roots.
Landscape Use of Royal Carpet Alyssum
Royal Carpet Alyssum is perfect for pots and containers. It easily bulks out the lower area and spills over the edge to allow another, taller flower room to bloom above it. It is also used in some pest management practices for its ability to draw insects to the garden that help eat common garden pests.
About Royal Carpet Alyssum Garden Seeds
In zones 9 and higher, Alyssum can also be grown as a perennial but should be kept in check with regular pruning. Royal Carpet Alyssum flowers are considered to be some of the easiest flowers to grow directly from seeds.
Alyssum is considered invasive in some locations of the world. Check with your local extension about laws and policies if you have questions specific to your area. When in doubt, keep it contained to a pot, avoid reseeding, and remove the plant at the end of the season.
Lobularia maritima, more commonly known as Alyssum, Sweet Allison, or Sweet Alyssum, is a low-growing species native to the Mediterranean and Canary Islands. Sweet Alyssum is one of the most fragrant blooms available and one of the most award-winning.
Royal Carpet won the 1953 All American Selections award for being an outstanding pick. It continues to live up to it’s tout even today.
Alyssum plants are edible and non–toxic to both humans and animals.
