Growing Non-GMO Organic Cut and Come Again Zinnia Flower Seeds
Zinnias can be directly sown outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. However, if you want to get a head start, you can also start the seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last expected frost date. If starting indoors, transplant seedlings into the garden when they have developed two true leaves and nighttime temperatures remain above 50 F.
Sow seeds 0.25 inch deep. When sowing outdoors, plant about 2-3 seeds per hole and thin to the strongest seedling after germination. Space plants 9 to 12 inches apart, with row spacing of 12 to 18 inches, to allow for adequate air circulation and to reduce the risk of disease. Ideal soil temperatures for germination are between 70-75 F. Seeds typically germinate within 7 to 14 days under optimal conditions.
Slowly harden off the seedlings before transplanting outdoors. Fertilize the flowers 1-3 times throughout the season with compost or another organic fertilizer of choice. Zinnias are drought tolerant but will put out the most blooms with regular watering. However, they do not do well in overly wet and humid conditions, so avoid overwatering as well. The soil should be well-draining and allowed to mostly dry between irrigations.
Deadheading spent blooms is recommended to encourage new flowers and extend the blooming season. Pinching back young plants can promote bushier growth and more flower production.
Organic Cut and Come Again Zinnia in the Flower Garden
These zinnias are highly versatile in garden landscapes. They can be used as focal points in flower beds due to their vibrant colors and long-lasting blooms. They are ideal for borders and mass plantings, providing a spectacular display of color. Although not fragrant, their visual appeal makes them a popular choice for ornamental gardens.
Harvesting Cut and Come Again Organic Zinnia
Zinnias are excellent for cut flower arrangements due to their long vase life and sturdy stems. Harvest flowers when they are fully open, cutting the stems at a diagonal. Remove any leaves that would be submerged in water to maintain the freshness of the blooms.
