Growing Organic Whole Oat Grass
Place about 2 cups (12 oz) of oat berries in a bowl or large jar and cover with plenty of cool water. Remember that the berries will expand as they soak - give room. Soak 8-10 hours, then drain and rinse again. Let them sit, damp, in the bowl for another day until tiny white “nibs” appear.
Fill a 10 x 20 tray with 1-1.5 inches of moist coir or seed starting mix. Level out and gently firm the surface, or place a hydroponic pad in the tray and moisten it. Spread the berries evenly over the growing surface. Press gently into growing medium (not needed on pads). Cover with a humidity dome or an inverted tray.
Check moisture daily for 2-3 days. Mist with water as needed. Remove the cover when shoots are about 2 inches tall, and place them under lights or bright but indirect sunlight. Bottom water or mist once or twice a day: keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid standing water to reduce the risk of mold.
Harvesting Organic Whole Oat Grass
Use clean scissors to cut the wheatgrass below the green leaf blades—juice immediately for the best flavor and nutrients. A wheatgrass juicer is preferred; some vegetable juicers don’t work well for cereal grain juicing.
