Growing Non-GMO Teddy Bear Sunflower Flower Seeds
Teddy Bear sunflowers grow so vigorously that there is little reason to start seeds indoors. Sow directly after the final frost in a sunny spot on the north end of the garden and sheltered from strong winds. If desired, start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the final frost for even earlier blooms. Teddy Bear sunflowers are so vigorous that they will reach peak bloom in just 2 months. Expect multiple blooms per plant throughout the summer. Even if you harvest a few for cut bouquets or other uses, the plants typically rebloom if given proper care and nutrients.
Warmer climates cause Teddy Bear sunflowers to stretch and grow larger, whereas cooler temperatures cause the plants to exhibit a more dwarfed habit. Avoid overhead watering and properly ventilate to minimize moisture. This variety is not likely to need staking unless desired or high winds are predicted, and they are growing isolated. Teddy Bear sunflowers are one of the most resilient flowers in all of North America. Trim off declining foliage as the summer progresses. Teddy Bear sunflowers have average water requirements.
Teddy Bear Sunflower in the Flower Garden
Teddy Bear sunflowers are full of potential. Scatter them in any bare spot of soil or intentionally plant them along a property line. No matter how you use them, they are sure to thrive and bring bright color to the garden and table!
Harvesting Teddy Bear Sunflower
Teddy Bear sunflowers have edible seeds that develop about 3 months after planting. To collect the seeds, simply wait until the petals have faded and then utilize a mesh bag. Place the mesh bag over the flowerhead and secure it. A seed collecting bag can be great for this. Over the next 3-4 weeks, the seeds will fully mature and release into the bag. When the flowerhead is empty, remove the bag and use the seeds for snacks, bird feeders, or next year’s crop!
These fluffy flowers can be cut and used for seasonal bouquets of bright yellow. When they are in full bloom, snip off the stem as far down as possible. Tie a few stems together with a rubber band and suspend them upside down in a well-ventilated area for dried flowers in 2-3 weeks!
About Teddy Bear Sunflower Garden Seeds
Teddy Bear sunflowers are ideal for photoshoots and backdrops for their fluffy sunflower look and amazing height.
Teddy Bear sunflower seeds are incredibly attractive to bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, birds, and beneficial insects of many kinds.
Teddy Bear sunflower is one of the most unique and lavish of all the varieties of Helianthus annuus. Teddy Bear sunflowers hardly look anything like a traditional sunflower aside from the bright golden yellow petals. Teddy Bear sunflowers do not grow traditional large, seeded centers (although they do still produce seeds) with single layers of petals but instead grow unique fluffy, pom-pom heads with a seemingly infinite amount of feathered, golden petals.
