Growing Non-GMO Santa Fe Sunset Sunflower Flower Seeds
Santa Fe Sunset F1 hybrid sunflower seeds grow well in most areas. Directly sow these seeds as soon as the soil temperature exceeds 45 F. For earlier blooms, start the seeds inside 3-4 weeks before the soil warms up. However, most gardeners have success with the direct sow method. Plant the seeds in a prepared area, free of weeds and in full sun. The seeds should germinate in about two weeks and grow rapidly enough that you can almost watch the progression.
These gorgeous single-stem annuals will die at the first hard frost. In mild winter areas where the seeds are not collected, volunteers can pop up the next year. However, there is no need to worry about volunteered taking over, as these showy sunflowers aren’t invasive or harmful. Santa Fe Sunset sunflowers have average water requirements and can handle light variations in irrigation. This variety will not likely need staking except at the end of the season or during rough weather.
Santa Fe Sunset Sunflower in the Flower Garden
Santa Fe Sunset Sunflowers are breathtaking to plant among a wildflower mix or along a property or fence line. They are an excellent choice for involving kids or novice gardeners in their effortless, exciting, and noticeable growth. They can be a focal point for their captivating exhibit or scattered in any bare patch of soil due to their willingness to grow.
Harvesting Santa Fe Sunset Sunflower
This variety does well as cut flowers for seasonal bouquets. When they are in full bloom, snip off the stem 12-18 inches below the flowerhead. Store in cool, clean water for indoor beauty lasting 2-3 weeks! Optionally, bundle a few together and hang them upside down in a well-ventilated area for dried sunflowers!
Santa Fe Sunset Sunflowers also bear edible seeds. Follow these suggestions: First, be swift! The birds and small critters adore these seeds and will eat them as promptly as possible. Utilize a mesh sack with a drawstring like a seed collecting bag or nut milk bag, and cinch it over the flowerhead when the petals have faded. Over the next four weeks, the seeds will ripen and fall into the bag for easy collecting!
About Santa Fe Sunset Sunflower Garden Seeds
This variety can also be referred to as St Bartholomew’s Star, Golden Flower of Peru, or Comb Flower.
Sunflowers can also be planted in pots that are deep enough. Select a planter that is at least 12-18 inches deep. Bear in mind that a sunflower in a pot that is too small will struggle to reach its full potential.
Santa Fe Sunset Sunflowers are perfect for those who love sunflowers but may be sensitive to pollen. This variety has been hybridized to be pollen-less.
Instead of harvesting the seeds, leave them on the flowers and watch the tall stalks become zero-waste bird feeders in the fall!
Expect a minimum of four weeks of constant color during their peak flowering season, with many blooms persisting from summer into fall!
