Growing Guatemalan Blue Winter Squash in the Vegetable Garden
Sow seeds 1 inch deep in warm soil after frost danger. Direct sow in hills or rows, or start indoors 3-4 weeks early in biodegradable pots to avoid root disturbance. Space plants 36-48 inches apart, with 60-72 inches between rows to give vigorous vines room to run.
Keep soil evenly moist and mulch to conserve water and suppress weeds. Feed with compost or a balanced fertilizer at planting and again when vines begin to run. Encourage pollinators; avoid overhead watering to reduce mildew. Good companions include corn and beans; avoid potatoes.
Harvesting of Guatemalan Blue Winter Squash
Harvest when rinds are hard and matte blue-gray and stems are dry and corky—before hard frost. Cut fruit, leaving 2-3 inches of stem. Cure for 10-14 days in a warm, dry, well-ventilated spot around 80 to 85°F, then store in a cool, dry place. Properly cured fruits can be stored for months.
