Laurentian rutabagas are a root crop in the Brassicaceae (cabbage) family. Unlike other brassicas, rutabagas are tolerant of soils with low fertility, however, they require loose soil for proper root development and may be sensitive to boron deficiency.

As rutabagas are a cool-weather crop, rutabaga seeds can be directly sown into the garden soil as soon as it can be worked in the spring. However, to harvest in the fall, you may want to plant seeds in early- to mid-summer, depending on the length of your growing season. A light frost near the time of fall harvest will improve the flavor.

You can plant Laurentian heirloom rutabaga seeds in full sun or partial shade.
