Growing Organic Bush Delicata Winter Squash in the Vegetable Garden
Sow seeds 1 inch deep after frost when soil is warm, or start indoors 3 to 4 weeks early in biodegradable pots to limit root disturbance. Space plants 24 to 36 inches apart, with 36 to 48 inches between rows; compact bushes are ideal for raised beds and large containers. Mulch to conserve moisture and keep fruits clean.
Water steadily during flowering and fruit set. Side-dress with compost or a balanced fertilizer as plants begin to bloom. Harvest frequently as fruit size up to keep plants productive and reduce pest pressure.
Harvesting of Organic Bush Delicata Winter Squash
Pick when rinds are firm with a cream background and distinct green striping, and stems are dry and corky—before hard frost. Cut fruit, leaving 2 to 3 inches of stem. Cure 10 to 14 days in a warm, dry, well-ventilated place around 80 to 85 F, then store cool and dry for several months.
