Growing Honeybaby Hybrid Butternut Winter Squash in the Vegetable Garden
Sow seeds 1 inch deep after frost when soil is warm, or start indoors 3 to 4 weeks early in biodegradable pots to minimize root disturbance. Space plants 24 to 36 inches apart, with 48 to 60 inches between rows; compact vines suit raised beds and large containers.
Mulch to conserve moisture and keep fruit clean. Water steadily during flowering and fruit set. Side-dress with compost or a balanced fertilizer as vines begin to run. Encourage pollinators and train vines to keep aisles clear.
Harvesting of Honeybaby Hybrid Butternut Winter Squash
Harvest when rinds are fully tan and hard and stems are dry and corky—before hard frost. Cut fruit, leaving 2 to 3 inches of stem. Cure for 10 to 14 days in a warm, dry, well-ventilated place around 80 to 85 F, then store in a cool, dry place. Properly cured fruits keep for months.
