Growing Apple Small Gourd in the Vegetable Garden
Direct sow Apple Small gourd after the last frost once the soil is warm, planting 1 inch deep. In shorter seasons, start indoors 3 to 4 weeks early and set out when the soil has warmed. Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart to allow vigorous vines room to grow, or train them onto a sturdy trellis for better airflow and cleaner gourds.
Keep soil evenly moist through establishment and during flowering and fruit set. Mulch to reduce weeds and maintain moisture, and avoid frequent overhead watering to limit foliar disease. Hand pollination can help improve set in cool or wet weather.
Harvesting of Apple Small Gourd
Harvest gourds when stems begin to brown and harden, cutting with a short handle attached. Cure in a warm, dry, well-ventilated space, out of direct sun, until the rind is fully hardened and the gourds turn brown. Discard any fruits that soften during curing.
About Apple Small Gourd Garden Seeds
Apple Small is a classic craft gourd valued for its uniform, apple-like shape and dependable yields. Fruits are dark green when fresh and dry to a warm brown, making them easy to paint, carve, and decorate for autumn displays.
Grow on a trellis to showcase the hanging fruit and reduce ground contact, then use fully cured gourds for centerpieces, garlands, wreaths, and seasonal projects.
Tips From Our Gardeners
For the best curing results, harvest with stems attached and wipe gourds dry. Cure with plenty of airflow and turn them occasionally; you will get harder shells and fewer mold spots as they dry.
