Growing Purple Podded Pole Bean in the Vegetable Garden
Sow seeds outdoors after the last frost once the soil has warmed. Plant 1 inch deep and 3-6 inches apart along a sturdy trellis, fence, or teepee, or 4-6 seeds around each pole. Space rows 24-36 inches apart and install supports before sowing to avoid disturbing the roots. Beans prefer full sun and loose, well-drained soil enriched with compost but not over-fertilized with nitrogen.
Keep soil evenly moist during germination, then water deeply when the top inch of soil dries. Mulch once seedlings are several inches tall to conserve moisture and limit weeds. As vines reach 6-12 inches, gently guide them onto their supports. Regular picking encourages steady flowering and pod set through the warm season.
Harvesting Purple Podded Pole Bean
Begin harvesting when pods are 5-7 inches long and still slender, before seeds bulge. Pods should be bright purple, crisp, and snap cleanly. Pick every 2-3 days to maintain production. Pods will turn green during cooking but retain their tender texture and rich bean flavor.
About Purple Podded Pole Bean Garden Seeds
An heirloom selection discovered in the Ozark region in the 1930s and sometimes called “Purple Peacock,” Purple Podded has earned a reputation for productivity, ornamental beauty, and flavorful, stringless pods. The deep-purple pods stand out against green foliage for easy harvesting, while lilac blossoms add color to trellises and teepees.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"Warm soil is the secret to vigorous pole beans. Wait until nighttime temperatures remain consistently mild, then sow and lightly mulch after emergence. Harvest early and often—if pods fill with seed, yields slow down quickly."
