What is "Below Standard Seed"?
Simply put, it is seed that doesn't meet our state's (Utah) germination standard, a standard that varies slightly from seed to seed. Any seed intended for gardening that has a below standard germination rate cannot be sold alongside those that meet the state requirements (which often reflect the national requirements for germination).
We send samples of all our seed to the Utah Department of Agriculture, where they perform several tests to assess the quality of the seed. These state-wide and national seed standards are in line with Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA), which exist to ensure consumers that they are getting the highest quality seed, as advertised. Since this seed doesn't meet the state standard, we mark it as "Below Standard Seed".

About Austrian Field Pea Cover Crop Garden Seeds
Austrian field pea is a cool-weather cover crop ideally suited for direct, full sun outdoor garden sowing as soon as soil can be worked after the final frost date. For cover crop use, broadcast seeds directly 1-2" deep and 2-3" apart in organically rich, well-drained garden soil in full sun, light shade in warm summer months for an overwinter kill. Pea cover crop seeds are traditionally soaked overnight in warm water to accelerate germination. Heirloom Austrian field pea seeds germinate in 7-14 days, thinning back to 4-6" apart in the garden once true leaves establish. If grown as a cover crop, allow heirloom field pea seeds to grow without thinning. Pisum sativum subsp. arvense is a hardy cover crop with no serious pests or diseases, but monitor regularly for slugs and powdery mildew.
A European heirloom native to Western Austria, the heirloom Austrian field pea is understood to be the most hearty and sustaining among open-pollinated pea plants. Non-GMO Austrian field pea is a trailing annual garden vegetable and cool-season cover crop known to have a stronger ability to provide weed control in the pea plant family. In North America, the heirloom Austrian field pea is widely cultivated in the cool, temperate Pacific Northwest.
Austrian Field Pea Benefits
Heirloom field pea is rich in protein-fortifying amino acids and carbohydrates and, even just a half-cup serving, provides nearly 50% of the daily recommended values of several essential vitamins. The field pea is widely accepted as one of the earliest domesticated crops, but it was mostly cultivated for livestock fodder only. Today, it is also a choice cover crop to aid in replenishing nitrogen, soil tilth, erosion control, and repelling certain soil-borne pathogens. The open-pollinated Austrian field pea seed grows a popular protein substitute and can highlight both the flower garden and variety of culinary treats in the kitchen.
