Growing Basil Treviso in the Herb Garden
Basil Treviso thrives in warm, sunny conditions. For an early start, sow seeds indoors 5-7 weeks before your last frost. Press seed into moist mix and cover very lightly, keeping at 65-75 F with bright light. Transplant outdoors once nights have warmed, and all danger of frost has passed, spacing plants 8-12 inches apart in rows 12-18 inches.
For direct sowing, plant after the soil has warmed, like you would for tomatoes or summer squash. Sow 0.125-0.25 inch deep and thin to one vigorous seedling every 8-12 inches. Water regularly, but avoid soggy soil. A light mulch helps keep roots cool and moisture even in containers and raised beds. Avoid excess nitrogen, which can make growth lush but dilute flavor.
Harvesting of Basil Treviso
Begin harvesting when plants are well established and 6-8 inches tall. Pinch out the growing tips above each leaf pair to encourage branching, then continue harvesting stems and leaves regularly. Treviso's short internodes and highly branched habit give many harvest points on each plant.
Thanks to its heat tolerance and slow-to-flower nature, Treviso holds leaf quality and flavor later into the season than many basil varieties. Leaves resist oxidation and bitterness after harvest, making them ideal for bright green, sweet pesto. Harvest in the cool of morning and use promptly for peak aroma, or loosely store unwashed stems in water at room temperature for short-term holding.
About Basil Treviso AAS Garden Seeds
Basil Treviso is a 2026 All-America Selections Edible - Vegetable Winner and National Winner, bred by GardenGenetics and Seeds by Design. In trials across North America, it impressed judges with its compact, mounded habit, dense branching, and excellent performance in containers and small-space gardens.
The slightly anise-scented leaves stay tender and flavorful, even in summer heat, with demonstrably reduced oxidation and bitterness after harvest. Combined with downy and powdery mildew tolerance and a notably slow-to-flower habit, Treviso offers a long harvest window of top-quality leaves—an outstanding choice for gardeners who want a reliable, premium pesto basil.
