Growing Non-GMO Organic Pink Larkspur Flower Seeds
Larkspur seeds require a vernalization period of approximately 6 weeks to produce great blooms. It is best to directly sow larkspur seeds as they have a taproot habit, but may be started indoors for regions that experience warm spring and summer temperatures. Direct sow when soil temperatures are above freezing but BELOW 55F. To start seeds indoors, place them in a sealed, dry container in the refrigerator 8-10 weeks before your planting date. Then, after 4-6 weeks in the fridge, plant them indoors as you would any other seed. Place indoor starts in a cool location. This method allows you to manipulate when they are planted outdoors. They can also be planted in the fall in regions with warm spring and summer temperatures or spring in cold climates. Indoor-grown seedlings should be transplanted outside once they have two sets of true leaves and the soil is cool but workable.
When sowing seeds, plant them at a shallow depth of 0.125-0.25 inches since they require light to germinate. The recommended germination temperature is 40-55 F. Space the seeds about 4-6 inches apart; if planting in rows, keep them 12-18 inches apart. This spacing ensures good airflow and helps prevent diseases, particularly in more humid climates. After sowing, keep the soil consistently moist but not soaked for germination.
Larkspur enjoys cooler temperatures and performs best when planted in the spring and fall. It can tolerate light frost but will not tolerate heat. In hot climates, it's important to plant them during your cooler months. Consider a location where they receive some afternoon shade. Deadheading spent blooms can help prolong the flowering season, but it is not required.
Organic Pink Larkspur in the Flower Garden
Pink Larkspur is primarily grown as a cut flower but can also be used in the landscape, where it adds a tall, striking presence to borders, cottage gardens, and wildflower meadows. Its vertical growth habit makes it an excellent choice for the back of beds, where it can tower above lower-growing plants. It also works well in mass plantings, creating a soft, romantic effect in larger gardens.
Harvesting Organic Pink Larkspur
It's best to harvest the stems when one-third to one-half of the flowers on each spike have opened. Use sharp scissors or pruners to cut the stems early in the morning for the freshest blooms. After cutting, immediately place the stems in a bucket of water. Remove any leaves that will sit below the waterline in the vase and change the water every few days to prevent bacteria growth. Pink Larkspur flowers typically last 5-7 days in a vase.
About Organic Pink Larkspur Garden Seeds
Larkspur (all parts of the plant) is toxic to humans and animals if ingested. The plant contains alkaloids that can cause gastrointestinal issues and other symptoms if consumed in large quantities. Do not grow or allow to spread where livestock can access it.
Larkspur is native to parts of Southern Europe, though it has been widely cultivated for centuries in gardens worldwide.
Pink Larkspur is one of the most popular cut flowers for spring events like weddings.
Once planted, Larkspur often self-seeds, coming back in future seasons without replanting, yet it is not considered invasive.
While it is not considered a hard plant to grow, Larkspur has some specific requirements, particularly regarding temperature and moisture. It may require more care for gardeners in warmer climates to ensure the plant doesn’t suffer in the heat.
Tips From Our Gardeners
"Larkspur can also be planted in mixed flower beds or as a focal point within a larger planting scheme. Though not fragrant, it adds visual interest and attracts pollinators, making it a valuable plant for any flower garden."
