If you live in the warm winter frost-free zones of 9b, 10, 11, or 12, these seeds are for you! Because the hot summers often bring temperatures less than ideal for growing outdoors, the winter season is prime for growing a garden. Try some of these recommendations this month.
Outdoors (veg & herbs): Asian Greens (i.e., komatsuna or tatsoi), mustard, lettuce, arugula, spinach, swiss chard, kale, collards, bunching onion, cilantro, dill, parsley, carrots, beets, radishes, turnips, kohlrabi, fennel, peas, fava beans.
Cover crops: Crimson clover, hairy vetch, winter rye, oats; in low deserts, add forage peas or bell beans. Consider our All-Purpose Cover Crop Mix.
Flowers: Calendula, nasturtium, sweet peas, viola/pansy.
Starts to begin now (for late winter transplants): Bulbing onions (short/intermediate-day), leek chives, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kohlrabi, lettuce, celery, parsley, thyme, oregano, sage, artichoke, fennel.
Tip: Use lightweight row cover for insect pressure and occasional radiational frosts; succession-sow every 2–3 weeks.
